Technical Data: Chemical Reactions

Reagents may have many different effects. Some are absorbed, some dissolve the nylon and some cause decomposition or embrittlement in varying degrees, depending, in some cases, on other factors such as the crystallinity of the nylon. Chemical resistance test results have therefore been placed info four categories.

 These classifications cannot be precise and the groups do overlap to some extent. Nevertheless, the table is a general guide to suitability of the nylons resins for particular chemical environments. The only final test in many instances is to evaluate a prototype part in simulated service with the reagent in question.

A.  No attack, little or no absorption, little or no effect on mechanical properties.
B.  Little or no attack, some absorption causing slight swelling and slight reduction in mechanical properties at 73 degrees Farenheit (23 degrees Celsius)
C. 
Some attack or considerable absorption at 73 degrees Farenheit (23 degrees Celsius) material not suitable for contact unless limited product life is acceptable.
D. 
Material decomposes at 73 degrees Farenheit (23 degrees Celsius) in a short time.
