What is a speed reducer?

Speed reducers are used to, unsurprisingly, reduce the speed of mechanical energy. A speed reducer is simply a gear train between the motor and the machinery that is used to reduce the speed with which power is transmitted. The output gear of a speed reducer rotates more slowly than the input gear. However, speed reducers don't just reduce the speed they also increase the torque, because the output gear has more teeth than the input gear.

It is not uncommon for speed reducers to use a worm gear, which uses a wheel gear and a worm to reduce the speed. Worm gears are popular options in speed reducers because they allow for the greatest speed reduction in the smallest package.
